Orthodontic Wire Treatment

Orthodontic Wire Treatment

Orthodontics is a specialty field of dentistry that deals with the diagnosis and correction/treatment of the malpositioned teeth and the jaws associated with the face and jaw structure; orthodontics can help fix teeth and set them in the right place. Orthodontics literally means straight teeth; having said that, its treatment area is much larger. Poor closing of upper and lower jaws (malocclusion), horizontal dentition tendency and deterioration in tooth eruption due to maxillary and mandibular constriction are among the treatment areas of orthodontic wire therapy.

How is Orthodontic Wire Treatment Done?

Planning of the orthodontic treatments firstly begins with the diagnosis of the problem. Planning is done through radiographs taken from different angles. The ongoing process that is followed by making mold of the lower and upper jaws separately forms the treatment plan together with the evaluation of all data. Since treatment is planned specifically for each patient’s needs, differences may occur depending on the patient. The orthodontic wire therapy applications that are specifically done for maxillary and mandibular constriction may require tooth extraction. Extraction of healthy teeth should be accepted as part of the treatment. Orthodontic treatments are usually performed with braces. The braces, which had a quite rough appearance in the past, nowadays have different applications with the development of technology and increase in demand for orthodontic wire treatment. Transparent and colored braces that are fixed to the back surface of the teeth are offered to the patients’ preferences.

When to start Orthodontic Treatment?

There is no age limit for orthodontic treatment along with new techniques developed today. The treatments related to the malpositioned teeth can be easily applied at every age. If there is a problem with the jaw structure, treatment should be performed before the skeletal development is completed. The recommended period for the treatment of the skeletal related disorders is before age 12. The lower limit for orthodontic treatment is age 7. It will be convenient to wait since the shedding of deciduous (primary) teeth is not completed and main teeth do not come in before this age. The children who are 7 years old should be taken to the general dental checkup since the earlier the orthodontic treatment is started, the shorter will be the treatment process. Treatment process that approximately lasts 1 to 2 years is shortened in the age of development while it is prolonged in adults.
