What is Hair Transplantation?
The first steps of hair transplantation were taken with the method of scalping head skin and grafting it to another region in the 19th century. Hair plantation (restoration) is now performed with highly technological methods. Japan had studied on modern hair transplantation methods in 1930s; however, these studies came out quite late because Japan had been isolated from the world for many years. The process publicly known as hair plantation is medically named as hair transplantation or restoration. This procedure is now carried out by transferring the hair follicles taken from the nape region into the area with hair loss.
Hair Transplantation Methods
There are two commonly used methods for hair transplantation. The first of these methods is the FUT technique which has been preferred over many years, but gave way to more innovative and painless methods. In order to perform the hair transplantation process with the FUT technique, a linear strip is extracted from nape region (donor site) with a scalpel. The extracted hair follicles are dissected one by one under the microscope and prepared for transplantation. After this application, the extracted area is stitched. Straight line stitching in the nape area causes this method not to be demanded so often. With the FUE method, which is becoming popular instead of the FUT method, hair transplantation is more popular because it is painless, easier to apply and does not leave any surgical scar. The Follicular Unit Extract (FUE) is the process of extraction and transplantation of hair follicles. Donor site is also the nape region in the FUE method. In this method, hair follicles are extracted using a 1mm diameter punch tool. The follicles are transferred into the canals in the recipient site. Today, hair transplantation is a very easy and scar-free operation that allows 7000-8000 follicles to be transplanted in a single session.
Is Hair Transplantation Permanent Operation?
Hair transplantation is a lifelong procedure. Natural hair line formation can be achieved with hair transplantation operation which is a successful plastic surgery method. The hair transplantation procedure, which ensures hair density in the frontal areas where the hair loss is intense, also ensures the nape area not to be damaged. If the nape area has high hair density, it is nearly impossible to see that hair follicles have been taken from the area. After hair transplantation process, the newly transplanted hair follicles start to grow in 3-4 months. 50% of the transplanted hair grows in 6 months; 95% of transplanted hair grows in 1 year on average. The application is permanent for a lifetime because hair follicles are taken from an area where there is no hair loss.
